CITY ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXHIBITION, KŐ-HEGY, CALVARY

The rich outcome of archaeological excavations and research of local history, going on in the area of Budaörs for several decades now, has allowed for a stand-alone exhibition presenting the several thousand year old past of our settlement, under Károly Király u. 2. Within the framework of the „Living Museum" programme, visiting children and their parents are flown to the past through programmes of the historical playhouse every Saturday between 10 and 13 o'clock. After seeing the exhibition, you can take an easy walk along Kárpát utca up to the 235-m-high Kő-hegy, the installed stairs lead as far as the Chapel. On the crest stretching out in an east-west direction, you can find dolomite rocks of interesting shapes with caves created formerly by thermal springs. Unfortunately, natural vegetation of the area has recently abated but visitors are compensated by sacral values and the wonderful view. The Immaculate Conception Chapel was built in 1855 by Ferenc Wendler, who later lived as a hermit in the neighbouring cave. This place of pilgrimage, becoming ever more important, was destroyed in World War II and was rebuilt in 2003 based on old photographs and drawings by way of several thousand donations. The hilltop next to the chapel was the venue of the passion-plays performed between 1933 and 1939 and staged by school-teacher Géza Bató in Hungarian and German languages. This beautiful tradition has been revived since 2000 through the organisation of the German Ethnic Municipality. Our walk on Kő-hegy is worth continuing on neighbouring Calvary hill, which you can reach by walking along Kőszikla and Kőláb utca. This 173-m-high hill of a very interesting cone shape was formed by a former geyser. From the small Baroque chapel built by Jakab Kreis in 1817, a path with stations of the Cross leads to the Cross on the top of the hill. This ensemble, almost totally destroyed, was renewed in 2002.
