ROUTE 2

ODVAS-HEGY, ÚT-HEGY, CSIKI-HEGYEK, HUSZONNÉGYÖKRÖS-HEGY

You can start this walk from the Városháza stop of the buses number 40 and 88. You reach the foot of Odvas-hegy behind the beautiful new town hall and then along Odvas-hegy utca, following the red cross sign. From here, a narrow and very steep path leads up to the peak but it is worth climbing, especially in early spring when plants growing on the rocks decorate the hill - bald in hot summer - in another colour every week. Since this is the highest elevation in the city (343 m), it is worth looking round from the top in clear weather. When returning from the peak, you should stop to take a closer look at the dolomite tower rock showing all shades of red and yellow of the former quarry of Út-hegy. Courageous visitors can also climb Út-hegy and, on the way, see globe-daisy, dwarf almond, celandine, Solomon's seal and feather-grass. Continue walking following the yellow cross sign in Csalogány utca until you find the tourist path signed yellow between Ló-hegy and Szállás-hegy. Turn left on this signed path and you can walk around Csiki-hegyek and Huszonnégyökrös-hegy comfortably, along the contour-lines. The shady oak forest has plenty of plants in its clearings: peach-leafed bell-flower, cuckoo-pint, Buda start-thistle, blood-wort and thyme; as for bushes, hedge-thorn, cornel-berry, dog-rose and elderberry. Unfortunately, the man-planted Australian pine forests have a remarkably high number of fallen and dried trees. Re-plantation has been started but, this time, using indigenous, deciduous species. You can reach the stop of bus number 88 at Szabadság út by following the yellow sign along Tárogató, Orchidea and Csiki utca.
